With the busy schedules of high school students today, lack of sleep has become a common problem. Shockingly, over 80% of teenagers fail to get the recommended amount of rest, leading to significant implications for their driving skills. When inexperienced and sleep-deprived teens take the wheel, they put themselves and others at risk of the dangerous consequences of drowsy driving. The main goal of Prioritize Teen Sleep is to spread awareness about this often-neglected issue.
Our goal is to partner with local insurance companies, the Board of Ed, specialists in sleep medicine and neurology, and neighboring schools. With their help, we would like to hold presentations at schools to discuss this issue, publish articles and newsletters, put up banners in school parking lots, and compile resources on how students can fight sleep deprivation and drowsy driving

Throughout much of high school, I have found myself battling against the tradeoff between getting a full night's sleep and staying up to finish all my work. I have experienced the attention and performance deficits that come with sleep deprivation and am concerned about the implications it has on an inexperienced teenager's driving abilities. As a founding member of the Prioritze Teen Sleep initiative, it is my goal to raise awareness and drive change for this issue. I hope to be able to bring attention to this underrepresented cause in our community and begin to chip away at the unsettling statistics regarding drowsy driving.

Hello! I am working towards the advocacy for teen sleep alongside Vithika. As a teenager, all aspects of this silent pandemic are prevalent in my life- staying up late to study, not getting enough sleep, and ultimately adding onto the number of potential crashes on the roads due to drowsy sleeping. I will soon be a young driver, and the statistics seen on our website clearly show the risk of crashes due to drowsiness. I hope through my advocacy to raise awareness on steps you can take to become a safer driver, while also creating healthy mental health habits for a safer society.
Prior to high school, choosing between getting sleep and completing assignments for a class was never in the same picture. Prior to high school, choosing between getting sleep and completing assignments for a class was never in the same picture. However, throughout high school, I saw myself not getting a full night's rest on multiple occasions in order to study for a class. The effects of sleep deprivation were alarmingly evident in my life, and I, along with Vithika and Meera, were very concerned with these negative effects being directly connected to inexperienced teenagers’ driving experience. Through the Priority Teen Sleep initiative, my goal is to make short-term and long-term changes that will help make our society a safer place. I hope to bring awareness to this unrepresented cause and shed light on the serious consequences sleep deprivation has, specifically focusing on drowsy driving.
My name is Dhara Patel and I am a senior. During the school year, I always find myself being extremely tired. Trying to balance school and my health is a struggle for me. I have to keep up my grades so I stay up to do work, but this cuts nights sleep so much. Plus, waking up in the morning and driving to school is difficult, especially if I didn’t get a good nights sleep from my assignments.

Trying to balance the amount of work I get and the endless hours of studying I put in to be able to pass my classes has put a negative effect with the hours of sleep I get. I’d usually end up falling asleep in a class the next day or do bad in class because of the drowsiness caused by the lack of sleep i got. There would be days where I wouldn’t sleep at all due to the amount of work given that would be due the next day.
